Listening Conversations
Creating Connections
Active listening is the foundation of any good relationship. At Matthew 25, we try to build listening into our daily practices and the DNA of our programs.
It’s easy in any kind of work to focus on the more concrete tasks such as “X number of meals served” or “X number of dollars donated toward housing repairs”. Those are incredibly important things to accomplish. But just as crucial are the relationships built, the familiarity and trust that bind us together as a community. That’s why we make time and space for listening.
Examples of How and Where We Conduct Listening Conversations
Groundswell Cafe Greeters
Several of our regular Groundswell Cafe volunteers are trained as Greeters who make time to sit and visit with guests. Many of the guests who visit Groundswell come from very difficult circumstances which can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness. Our hope is that a safe space, delicious meal, and friendly conversation demonstrate our belief that all people have sacred worth and deserve to be treated with dignity.
Structured 1:1 Conversations
Our Community Building Department conducts structured one-on-one conversations with neighbors, volunteers, and organizational partners in an effort to build deeper connections throughout the community. These 1:1 conversations follow an Asset-Based Community Development approach, looking for gifts and resources that can be put to use for the benefit of the community.
See Matthew 25’s Five Big Questions for a description of what we listen for in our 1:1 Conversations.
