Our Youth Development students wrapped up the season with growth, grit, and a true sense of community

The Youth Development Program is a paid opportunity for high-school-age students to develop and hone various skills in preparation for life beyond the classroom. The summer session is called the Seed Crew, and is 8 weeks of working, learning, and connecting as a team.

We made it to the final week, and time has flown by.

Monday…

was spent polishing posters and presentations, doing farm work, and preparing for Tuesday’s big event. The students had put thoughtful effort into what they wanted to share.

Tuesday…

was presentation day. After a morning of farm work and last-minute prep, students welcomed guests with a mix of nerves and excitement. They did fantastic—speaking clearly, answering questions openly, and showing courage even when public speaking felt intimidating.

Wednesday…

it was back to routine—farm work, cleaning, and CSA harvests. The last crew in Groundswell’s prep kitchen tackled a large catering order. Students also filled out applications for future crews and leadership roles. We ended the day with a quiet “Nature Sit” at Morgan Creek Arboretum, where students reflected on their surroundings in silence, sharing both observations and emotions.

Thursday…

was a beautiful final day. We weeded, mulched, baked kolaches and cookies, and completed exit interviews where students reflected honestly on the summer. Many also submitted resumes for critique, gaining valuable feedback to carry forward. After an early lunch, “Farm Olympics” brought out some spirited competition, and we closed with ice cream sundaes on the farm.

This season was filled with challenges, and our students met them with grit, growth, and teamwork. They built a supportive community while contributing meaningfully to the farm and Groundswell. We could not be more proud of them.
