Summer Stories: Youth Development Program, Week 6
Important farm work, small group projects and a fun trip to Dan and Debbie's Creamery highlighted Week 6 of our program.
The Youth Development Program is a paid opportunity for high-school-age students to develop and hone various skills in preparation for life beyond the classroom. The summer session is called the Seed Crew, and is 8 weeks of working, learning, and connecting as a team.
Week 6! How did we get here so fast? Week 6 began with some important farm work. We needed to get our onions trimmed and ready for market and storage. This is a surprisingly huge task, similar to garlic, and it required quite a bit of time. The rest of the students focused on farm maintenance tasks like edging the sidewalks and preparing for a fire pit.
They also began the process of working on small group projects. This included developing new value-added products to make and sell with our Urban Farm produce, and work on a rotational grazing plan for the Urban Farm chickens.
The students also enjoyed a field trip to visit one of our Corner Store vendors, Dan and Debbie’s Creamery. The students enjoyed a tour and sampled some ice cream. Although many had already indulged in plenty from the Corner Store, it was fascinating to see the production process firsthand.
